At home or in the photo studio? How to choose the location of your baby photoshoot

One of the most common questions I receive from clients during the booking process is whether they should opt for a baby photoshoot at home or in a lifestyle photography studio.

In this blog post, I will guide you through the considerations involved in choosing between an in-home photoshoot and a lifestyle studio session. By understanding the pros and cons of each option, you can make an informed choice that best suits your family's needs and aligns with your vision for the photoshoot.

There is no place like home:

There's an undeniable warmth and familiarity when it comes to having a photoshoot in the comfort of your own home. Here are a few reasons why an in-home photoshoot might be the perfect choice for you:

  1. Familiarity and Comfort: Your children feel at ease in their own surroundings, which often leads to more authentic and natural moments being captured. This approach gives a documentary feel to the photos.

  2. Personalized Touches: Incorporate your family's unique personality and style by showcasing meaningful items or rooms that hold special memories. Your home becomes a canvas for telling your family's story.

  3. Timelessness: Your home serves as a time capsule, reflecting the stage of life you are currently in. Whether it's the playing corner or the baby's room, the photographs will transport you back to those cherished moments for years to come.

While there are numerous advantages to an in-home photoshoot, it's important to consider a couple of potential drawbacks:

  • Cleaning: As a mom of a toddler myself, I know that cleaning the entire house can be a time-consuming task. However, for the photoshoot, we only need a few rooms, such as the living room and bedroom, so you don't have to worry about cleaning every corner of the house.

  • Lighting: Photographing in your home may present lighting challenges, especially if the space doesn't have optimal natural light. However, as a skilled photographer, I can adapt and work with the available light to capture beautiful images.

The Charm of the Lifestyle Photography Studio:

On the other hand, a lifestyle photography studio offers its own unique advantages and ambiance. Here's why a studio photoshoot might be the ideal choice for you:

  1. Versatile Settings: Since 2020 I work together with Friday Co-work in Berchem, allowing me to use their beautiful industrial building as my studio on weekends. The studio features different corners and decor, providing a variety of settings and allowing for creative compositions.

  2. Perfect Lighting: Equipped with high-quality lighting equipment and 3 meter high windows, the studio ensures that every detail is captured beautifully, regardless of the weather outside. Lighting challenges associated with shooting indoors are eliminated, resulting in bright and sharp photo's.

  3. Focus on Connection: In a dedicated photography space, the focus is solely on capturing the essence of your family's connections, interactions, and love. You don't have to worry about cleaning or organizing spaces, as the studio provides an aesthetic backdrop for your session.

While the studio offers many advantages, there a couple of cons to consider:

  • Distance: If you live far from the studio or if your baby struggles with car rides, it may be gentler on both you and your baby to have the session at home.

  • Personal Touch: Compared to your home, the studio may feel less personal. However, to create an intimate atmosphere, I always encourage clients to bring favorite toys, books, and blankets to make the space feel more theirs.

Making the Decision: Tips for Choosing

To help you make the best decision for your family, consider the following tips:

  1. Reflect on Your Style: Think about the aesthetic you envision for your family photos. Do you prefer a cozy, homely atmosphere or a more versatile and artistic setting? This will guide your choice between an in-home or studio photoshoot.

  2. Comfort and Convenience: Assess the comfort level of your family members and consider logistical factors. Are your children more relaxed and cooperative at home or in a studio environment?

  3. Meaningful Context: Reflect on the sentimental value attached to your home or the emotional significance of a studio environment. Which option better reflects your family's unique story and personality?
